Addiction, Coping & Emotional Pain
Compassionate support for this challenge.
Addiction, Coping & Emotional Pain
I work with addiction in a compassionate, non-judgmental way, focusing not only on the addiction itself, but on understanding the pain underneath it. Whether the addiction relates to alcohol, drugs, gambling, food, shopping, or other behaviors, I believe addiction is often a response to emotional pain.
Addiction as Coping
Addictive behaviors often develop as ways of:
- Coping with overwhelming emotions
- Escaping or numbing painful feelings
- Soothing anxiety or distress
- Managing shame or low self-worth
- Filling emptiness or loneliness
The Cycle
Often there's a strong desire for change, alongside an equally strong urge for relief. When the urge to use feels overwhelming, it can drown out other ways of coping. While the behavior temporarily soothes the pain, relief is short-lived, leaving shame and exhaustion.
Compassionate Healing
We work to:
- Understand what pain the addiction is trying to manage
- Explore the cycle of addiction with compassion, not judgement
- Develop healthier ways to meet underlying needs
- Build practical strategies to manage urges
- Address shame and develop self-compassion
- Create sustainable change at your pace
